JANUARY 5 · DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
A colorful first island day.
NCL highlights the city’s historic fort, Amber Museum and coastal scenery. A short city outing can give you a taste of the destination without turning the first port day into a marathon.
My pick: a guided city highlights outing, with time for photos and a relaxed stop along the way. Keep more demanding adventures as an option only if everyone is keen.
JANUARY 6 · U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
Beach time with a beautiful backdrop.
NCL’s St. Thomas options include Magens Bay, island viewpoints and snorkeling trips. The 10 a.m. arrival leaves room for an easy breakfast before heading ashore.
My pick: compare a Magens Bay beach outing with guided snorkeling. Choose the beach if you want a lower-effort day, or a suitable snorkel tour if everyone is comfortable in the water.
JANUARY 7 · BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
A possible highlight—if the fit is right.
The Baths are on nearby Virgin Gorda. NCL offers excursions involving a ferry and land transfers to the boulder-framed coast, with walking routes and beach time depending on the tour.
My pick: investigate The Baths as the trip’s big shore adventure, but compare its terrain, swimming and transfer requirements with the kids’ abilities. Staying on Tortola for a beach outing is a worthwhile alternative.
JANUARY 9 · BAHAMAS
Save some energy for the island finale.
NCL’s private island has white-sand beaches, the Great Life Lagoon pool, complimentary dining and optional extras such as cabanas and Great Tides Waterpark. It is a whole vacation day before the final evening aboard.
My pick: decide between a simple beach-and-pool day and a waterpark splurge. Build the plan around what the kids most want to do, with plenty of time for lunch and a last swim.

A RESORT THAT GOES PLACES

For this family trip, I’d give each day one anchor. A ride session, a special dinner or a show is enough to organize around. Let the rest be flexible. Trying to fit every attraction into the first sea day would miss much of what makes the ship appealing.
The best starting shortlist: Slidecoaster, Glow Court, a family games session, a relaxed meal together and an evening show. Add a grown-up escape if the kids enjoy the youth program. These are planning suggestions, not booked activities.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER?
Use the included restaurants as your everyday foundation and pick specialty meals because they sound fun, not because you feel obliged to buy an upgrade. My first family splurge would be Hasuki if everyone enjoys a lively meal; for a more relaxed evening, I’d compare Onda and Palomar.
Keep dinner flexible after a long day ashore. A reservation is less appealing when everyone is tired and would rather eat casually. If you do plan a special evening, pair it with a light afternoon.

WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN
Aqua has its own headline shows. Check the actual sailing’s program for dates, times, reservations and age guidance, then build dinner around the performances you want to see.
A concert-style tribute to Prince. Make this a first choice to investigate if the family enjoys a lively music night.
Acrobatics, magic and imagery inspired by the elements. A possible shared evening for a family that enjoys theatrical spectacle.
Rock music and NCL’s Fleetwood Mac tribute are possibilities to look for in the daily schedule. Confirm the venue and time on your sailing.
Look for a comedy set or a later dance session if it fits the evening. Check the specific performance’s age guidance before bringing the whole family.

THE VACATION INSIDE THE VACATION
Before sailing, have each child pick two things they really want to try from the videos. Make those the priorities. You’ll learn more about what excites them than you will by trying to rank every attraction yourself.
Give the children a low-pressure introduction rather than presenting it as somewhere they must stay. Ask the staff about the sailing’s sessions and sign-out rules. Plan adult time around confirmed availability, not an assumption that the club is always open.
Agree on when you will eat together, where you will meet and what to do if plans change. A simple rendezvous is more useful than a schedule so detailed nobody follows it.
A LITTLE PREP GOES A LONG WAY
